Leupold has long been one of the world’s top rifle scope manufacturers , stretching all the way back to the 1960’s when the company released the Vari-X II line. Using its passion and dedication to excellence, the company decided to give this amazing line of scopes a huge upgrade in 2012, adding a number of features and improvements before re-releasing the line as the VX-2.
Considered to be the company’s mid-range line of rifle scopes, the VX-2 offers the durability, functionality and image clarity the company is famous for. Still, it’s not always easy to see how it stacks up against the competition. This Leupold VX-2 review should enable you to compare it to other mid-range scopes.
Introducing the Leupold VX-2
Since its release in 2012, the VX-2 has become the scope of choice for numerous hunters and other shooters. A large part of this is due to the incredible image clarity these scopes provide. When considering purchasing the VX-2, users have at least 16 different variants to choose from, ranging from the smallest 1-4x20mm to models with higher maximum magnification and larger objective sizes like the 4-12x50mm and 6-18x40mm . Still, despite this range of sizes, each of the scopes has the same basic features and functions, which is why this review will just focus on the VX-2 in general, instead of being based on any particular size.
Although the highly popular Leupold Duplex reticle typically comes standard on most VX-2 scopes, you may have a choice between this and five other reticles depending on which model you purchase. Of course, this choice depends on what you’re most comfortable with, but there is a reason that the Duplex reticle comes standard, as it remains by far one of the best reticles out there. With slightly thicker crosshairs giving way too much thinner lines near the center, this Duplex reticle makes it super easy to accurately aim and find your target in virtually any light condition. This is one of the major reasons why the VX-2 is so highly rated.

- Super durable and weather resistant
- Great value for money

Image Brightness & Clarity
The clarity and brightness of the image are obviously two of the most important factors when choosing a new scope. It’s also two of the areas where the Leupold VX-2 really stands out. Featuring fully multi-coated optics, the VX-2 offers an incredibly bright, crystal clear image. This ensures you’ll have a perfect view in any light condition.
The lenses in the VX-2 are rated to provide approximately 94-percent light transmission, making these scopes some of the brightest and clearest currently on the market. As well, the outer edges of the lenses have been darkened to help improve contrast and resolution. Featuring Leupold’s Quantum Optic System, these scopes provide some of the highest quality images money can buy.
The VX-2 is truly designed to withstand the test of time, featuring a super-hard anodized finish. This helps to resist scratching, general wear and tear and other visible damage. As well, the exterior lens surfaces are covered with a special DiamondCoat exterior that keeps them from being scratched. The scope’s gas-filled interior is also specially sealed with an O-ring to prevent internal fogging.
Of course, the scope is also fully waterproof, rust resistant and fog proof, ensuring it can handle any weather conditions. To round things off, these scopes also come with the company’s Gold Ring Lifetime Guarantee, meaning you’ll receive a free replacement should it ever happen to break (which isn’t that likely).
Adjustments & Ease of Use
Not only does the Leupold VX-2 provide bright, clear, all-around excellent quality images, but it is also super easy to use. Fitting the scope on your rifle is a breeze thanks to the company’s special Torx mounting fasteners. These fasteners help to keep the scope securely in place and prevent it from shifting or moving due to recoil.
Adjusting the scope for windage and elevation is also super simple and doesn’t even require any tools. All you need to do is unscrew the protective caps, then use your fingers to adjust the elevation and windage dials. Each click provides approximately 1/4-inch M.O.A., allowing you to easily zero in your rifle until you’ve got things just right. When turning the dial, you will both feel and hear each click, which also helps to prevent problems with over-correcting.
While weight is not always the most important factor, it is still important to find a decently lightweight scope. You don’t want to be forced to pack around all that extra weight if you don’t have to. As you’d expect, the weight of the Leupold VX-2 varies depending on the size and strength of the particular model. Still, in general, the VX-2 is definitely one of the lightest scopes in its category, while still being extremely durable and providing super clear image quality.
Value for the Money
The VX-2 is generally considered a 4-star or mid-range scope in terms of price, and yet it still far outperforms many of the 5-star scopes out there. Although it’s definitely not cheap, the VX-2 still rates exceptionally high in terms of value for the money, as it continually ranks better than many of the more expensive models you’ll come across. Of course, if you’re looking for the absolute best rifle scope, you should still spend the extra money on a top-end scope. However, if you’re looking for an outstanding mid-priced scope, this is about as good as it gets.
As you can see from this Leupold VX-2 review, very few scopes can even begin to compare with this line in terms of image clarity, durability and overall quality. While this is already impressive in itself, these factors become even more impressive when you consider the fact that this isn’t even Leupold’s top line of scopes. For this reason, anyone looking for an excellent mid-priced scope owes it to themselves to at least give the VX-2 some strong consideration, as there is no doubt that it will fully live up to expectations.
